  79. 1. Disk vendors (those who sell Shareware disks for a profit) must follow
  80.    the procedure outlined in the "VENDOR.DOC" file.
  81. 2. You may not charge more than $3 U.S. per diskette.
  82. 3. The files and programs on the disks may not be modified or deleted.
  83. 4. The programs cannot be sold as part of some other more inclusive package.
  84. 5. The programs cannot be rented or leased to others.
  85. 6. When distributed via a telecommunications link, all ButtonWare programs
  86.    (and documentation files) must be transferred in a library or archive
  87.    format. This means that all the files on each ButtonWare disk must be
  88.    combined into one file - one file for each ButtonWare disk.
  89. 7. A separate version of PC-File is available for student use in classrooms.
  90.    The educational version includes a typeset and bound manual (over 400
  91.    pages) and authorization to use PC-File for a specific class in a specific
  92.    classroom.  For more information about ButtonWare's Education Policy and

  94. 8. Shareware distribution is permitted only in the United States, Canada,

  105. NOTE:  This copy of PC-File requires DOS 3.0 or later.  It is not compatible
  106. with most versions of DOS 2.x.  If DOS 2.x compatibility is important to
  107. you, please contact ButtonWare to see if a DOS 2.x compatible version is
  108. available.

  110. PC-File requires a hard disk or two 3-1/2" disk drives.  To install the
  111. programs, put the PC-File program disk into your A: disk drive and type
  112.  
  113.     A:INSTALL
  114.  
  115. INSTALL creates a subdirectory on your hard disk and copies the necessary
  116. programs and files into that subdirectory. You'll need about 1 mb of
  117. available disk space to INSTALL PC-File.

  124. If you did not purchase PC-File (complete with printed manual) directly
  125. from ButtonWare or from an authorized dealer, then you are evaluating the
  126. program.
  127.  
  128. We have tried to provide you with everything necessary to evaluate PC-File.
  129. The program uses clear, informative menus. Help screens are always available.
  130. Also, the file "CARD" can be printed to create a quick reference card with a
  131. summary of the program commands.
  132.  
  133. This is sufficient for most people to evaluate the program. However, some
  134. people prefer to have a complete copy of the printed manual.
  135.  
  136. A complete copy of the printed manual for PC-File is available on floppy
  137. disk to help you with your evaluation. It's almost 500 pages long so you'll
  138. need a lot of time, patience, and paper to print it out.  Because of space
  139. limitations, we have had to omit the tutorial section from the disk manual.
  140. This was not done to cripple the manual in any way. It was a required step
  141. because even when compressed, the full manual would not fit on a standard
  142. 5-1/4" floppy disk.
  143.  
  144. The manual on disk has been mailed to most of the major computer clubs, user
  145. groups, shareware disk dealers and bulletin board operators. You can obtain
  146. the manual on disk from one of these groups. Just ask for PC-File disk number
  147. 3, or the PC-File manual on disk.
  148.  
  149. To keep costs down, disk 3 is not included with purchased copies of PC-File
  150. and cannot be bought directly from ButtonWare. Purchased copies include a
  151. complete printed User's Manual, typeset and bound.
  152.  
  153. To print the PC-File User's Manual on disk, place the PC-File
  154. Disk Three in drive A and type:
  155.

  158. and press Enter.

  160. To start printing at a page number other than page 1, or to use a left
  161. margin, place the documentation disk in drive A and type:
  162.

  165. and press Enter. Replace "pageskip" with the page number to start at.
  166. Replace "margin with the number of spaces to include at the left of
  167. the document.

  169. For example, to print the documentation beginning at page 50 with a
  170. left margin of 5, you would type:

  180. ** PC-File 5.0 does not run under most DOS 2.x versions.  In order to use
  181.    PC-File 5.0, you must be running DOS 3.x or 4.x.  We recommend you
  182.    upgrade to DOS 3.3 or 4.0 since these versions are current.

  184. We did not discover these limitations until after the manuals and
  185. literature were printed.  Unfortunately, these limitations will not be
  186. removed in this version of PC-File.

  193. PC-File 5.01 is a minor update to PC-File 5.0.  The major difference is
  194. that PC-File 5.01 requires 450K available RAM -- 62K less than PC-File 5.0.
  195. Listed below are other minor changes and enhancements:
  196.  
  197. ** PC-File 5.01 includes a new function, TOSTR(any).  The TOSTR function
  198.    converts data to a character string whether the data is currently
  199.    character (text), numeric, date or logical data.  The TOSTR function
  200.    is especially useful when creating a user-defined index with two
  201.    types of data (character and date, for example) or two dates.  To
  202.    create a user-defined index of two date fields, DATE1 and DATE2,
  203.    you would enter the following for the index string:
  204.  
  205.        TOSTR(DATE1) + TOSTR(DATE2)
  206.  
  207. ** The DESCEND() function now takes a character, numeric, date or
  208.    logical field and produces a character result.  This allows you
  209.    to build a descending index using fields of different types.
  210.  
  211. ** PC-File 5.01 now dials the modem directly through the hardware
  212.    instead of using the BIOS.  This should make PC-File 5.01 compatible
  213.    with more hardware.
  214.  
  215. ** A new configuration parameter has been added to allow you to specify
  216.    the dialing string for your modem.  This can be used to include
  217.    modem commands or special dialing strings.  For example, the
  218.    following line in your profile will cause PC-File to send ATDT to the
  219.    modem:
  220.  
  221.       /PHINIT,"ATDT"
  222.  
  223.    If you don't include the /PHINIT parameter in your profile, PC-File
  224.    sends ATD to the modem.  The /PHINIT parameter must be added by
  225.    editing your profile with a text editor.
  226.  
  227. ** A new configuration parameter, /NODESC, has been added allowing you
  228.    to tell PC-File not to display the file descriptions when listing
  229.    databases, reports, letters and graph files. Using the /NODESC
  230.    parameter speeds up the display of files, since PC-File doesn't need
  231.    to access each file to read the description.  The /NODESC parameter
  232.    must be added by editing your profile using a text editor.
  233.  
  234. ** PC-File 5.01 takes advantage of Expanded memory, if available. It
  235.    still requires 450K available RAM, regardless of how much expanded
  236.    memory you have.  Expanded memory will speed up PC-File in several
  237.    ways.  First, PC-File stores a copy of the program overlays in
  238.    expanded memory, allowing PC-File to quickly access the same overlay
  239.    again and again.  Second, when dropping to DOS or displaying a graph,
  240.    PC-File 5.01 uses expanded memory to store a copy of itself.

  242. ** You can now tell PC-File where to write temporary files using the
  243.    environment variable called TMP. To set this variable, you type the
  244.    following at the DOS prompt:
  245.  
  246.        SET TMP=drive:\subdirectory
  247.  
  248.    where "drive:\subdirectory" is the drive and subdirectory where the
  249.    temporary files should be created.

  258.     CARD     - a reference card (summary of commands)
  259.     CHANGES  - detailed account of differences between this and
  260.                previous versions of PC-File
  261.     PRODUCTS - Short review of ButtonWare products, and an order form
  262.     RESPONSE - A user feedback survey.  Very important to us.

  265. After the manual was sent to press, we added a few very useful features
  266. to PC-File.  These features are documented below.
  267.  
  268. ** In PC-File, (Alt)X is a toggle which forces PC-File to use the current
  269.    index.  Normally, PC-File switches to the index which allows the search
  270.    to be performed as fast as possible.  (Alt)X can be used to prevent
  271.    PC-File from switching to the best index.
  272.  
  273. ** We have included a utility program called SETU which can be used to
  274.    change the next unique value.  To run SETU, at a DOS prompt, type:
  275.  
  276.        SETU
  277.  
  278.    The SETU program asks you to provide the name of the database and the
  279.    new unique value.  You can also include the database filespec and the
  280.    new unique value on the command line when you start SETU.  For example:
  281.  
  282.        SETU C:\DATA\CLIENTS 1001

  284.    would change the unique value to 1001 in the database called CLIENTS on
  285.    the C drive in the \DATA directory.
